Discussion
After the removal of the topsoil, it quickly became apparent that this
area was substantially covered by a buried soil deposit, particularly in
the north. Removal of this deposit revealed a number of ditches and post
holes, which were cut into natural chalk in the east and south, and into
colluvium in the west and north.
Actual excavation began on the 30th May, 1995, prior to the beginning
of the season proper. Isolated sections of ditches were excavated to obtain
profiles and dating material, before moving on to investigate the stratigraphic
relationships at the ditch intersections.
Before excavation began, 7 metal detector holes were seen in this area,
all of them from within the fills of ditches.
