Phasing

Apart from being sealed by spit 011AB00002, the feature had no other stratigraphic relationships. Although the context record mentions the finding of a sherd of Roman grey ware, this does not occur in the object record.

Discussion

This was a possible ditch in the extreme western part of Area 11AA, initially seen as a band of sandy material in the sandy gravel. Only a short segment was investigated, using a box section as the edges were very difficult to define. Even after excavation, it was still extremely difficult to define the edges of this possible feature. It was filled with a fine sandy loam (Munsell colour 10YR 3/4) with 20% chalk gravel inclusions. Given its proximity to the stream channel (12 metres to the east), it may be a natural alluvial feature.
