Pit

Discussion

A small pit located in between the enclosure ditches 011AB10003 and 011AB10004. The pit was filled with a sandy clay loam (Munsell 10/YR/34), and was cut into chalk natural. The pit contained a number of notable finds, not least the number of iron objects recovered. These were all located along the south-eastern edge of the feature, and include a number of strips as well as a hinge. It is possible that they may be the remains of a box, particularly as two of the fragments are associated with replaced wood. However, as the iron was all found in the top of the feature, it may be derived from a later event, and thus not associated with the Anglian knife found in the pit. Also of note are the animal bones, which include the leg of a dog, as well as a wood mouse mandible.
