Discussion

The eastern end of the trench was substantially higher than the rest of the excavated area, thus a number (4) of spits were needed to define the features. Ditch cut 011AB00272 was already defined in the deeper part of the trench, but its orientation was not yet visible. After the removal of the spits, it could clearly be seen that the ditch's orientation changed to a more northerly one, parallel to ditch 011AB00250. Niether ditch produced any dateable finds, although a lump of Niedermendig lava was found in the spits above the ditches. It is probable that these ditches have a water control function, acting as channels for the stream, leading into a possible mill pond to the north.
