Pit

Discussion

Initially noted as an area of darker soil, excavation proved this to be a deep pit. The pit had quite a narrow opening, which belled out under the surface, particularly along the north-south axis. The pit was filled with a fine loamy sand (Munsell 10YR 3/4). The chalk inclusion rate was around 5-10%, although the final 10cm of the fill (see section) contained a much higher (20-25%) rate, indicating a different fill which was not detected during the excavation phase. Generally speaking, the finds indicate a prehistoric date for the feature, with a leaf-shaped arrowhead (found near the base of the feature) and 3 other flint objects, as well as 2 Iron Age potsherds. However, 6 Romano-British sherds were also recovered. Also of note were 2 winkle shells, which were found in the upper part of the fill. The pit was cut into sandy gravel natural (layers of gravel and iron-panned sand).
