Ditch

Phasing

All of the finds were of post-Medieval drain or brick fragments, apart from what is presumably a residual flint blade. The drain fragments may well be relate to the modern pipe trench (011AB00080) which cut this feature to the east.

Discussion

It is possible that this ditch is related to the short excavated segment 011AB00920, some 16.5 metres to the east (they share the same orientation and alignment), although no evidence for a continuation was evident between the two segments. The only fill was a loamy sand (Munsell colour 10YR 3/4), with 5% chalk inclusions.

The ditch was cut into chalk gravel, with a wide U profile. The sandy base was disturbed by animal burrowing.
