Undefined Feature

Discussion

This was believed to be a natural feature, filled with a silty clay material very similar to that found in solution holes. However, unlike solution hole fills, the fill of this feature contained quite a high percentage (40-50%) of both rounded and angular chalk inclusions. The finds were predominantly snails, and a sample of these was taken from each of the two excavated segments. Two sherds of undiagnostic pottery were found in the northern excavated segment, and one sherd of prehistoric flint tempered ware was recovered from the southern segment. The excavator noted that all of the finds were from near the surface and may have been intrusive.
