Discussion

This was believed to be a natural terrace, filled with a sandy silty loam (Munsell colour 2.5YR 6/4), although a slight clay component was also noted. It was noted at the time that the area to the south of the terrace was a lumpy white chalk, while the area to the north consisted of a softer pink chalk. This difference is clearly seen in the geophysical survey results (AML 1990). It was plough truncated by the rig and furrow, as well as by modern ploughing, and may well relate to a glacial feature. However, it did contain both finds and animal bones (plotted above to mark the only segment of feature that was excavated).
