Discussion

The ditch was excavated at the end of the 1990 season and was one of a sequence of at least eight enclosure ditches marking the western boundary of the southern part of the settlement. The length of the ditch is the 11AE length only, as the possible extension into 11BD is assumed. If this were the case then the total length would be 37.5 metres. The segment in 11BD was initially excavated under the number 011BD01248, which is a part of 011AE07138. Although it was later recognised to be a feature in its own right, it was never given a context number. This ditch in particular was difficult to define, and many finds lifted under the number 011AE00102 (originally thought to be a Grubenhaus, later seen to be a sequence of three ditches) may belong to this feature. Consequently, no dateable finds were retrieved from this phase of the ditch sequence.
