Phasing

The finds do not easily allow a phase to be assigned to the ditch with any degree of confidence, being two prehistoric flint flakes, one fragment of Roman pot and a Medieval potsherd. It is possible that the Medieval sherd is intrusive, as it was found in close proximity to the remnants of a Medieval furrow. Although never very clear, it was felt by the excavators that the ditch cut through the quarry pit (011AE00127), and this is reflected in the stratigraphic sequence diagram below.

Discussion

A short, remnant segment of an east-west oriented ditch which contained very few finds and no identifiable animal bones. The ditch was not observed to continue either to the west or the east, and is presumed ploughed away totally beyond the excavated segment. The primary fill was a redeposited chalk natural (not observed along the entire excavated length), covered by a loamy sand (Munsell 10/YR/43).
