Discussion

A ditch segment in the west of area 11BD. The ditch was revealed within a trench (011BD01006), excavated to discover the depth and nature of the hillwash in this area. Parts of enclosure ditches 011CD07103 and 011CE07094 were also within the trench, visible before the trench was excavated. This segment of ditch was recovered after the removal of spit 011BD01015, a layer of buried soil. The fill of the segment was also of buried soil rather than the usual hillwash. The ditch was cut into more buried soil (spits 011BD01017 and finally 011BD01045). Although little material was recovered from the fill, the ditch is probably Roman in date, likely to be one of the enclosure ditches sweeping east/west from area 11AE.
