Discussion

A large pit to the south of the spring and north/east of well 011AD07152. The pit was initially thought to be another well but no evidence could be found to substantiate the theory. The pit was cut into large, angular, chalk blocks. Twelve fills were recovered, with varying degrees of chalk inclusions from tightly compacted chalk (011BD02010 and 011BD02016), possibly side slumping, through to fairly inclusion-free silty sands and clays. The primary fill (011BD02020) comprised of water-logged sand and clay. A fill of black humic material in the centre of the pit (011BD02011) contained animal bone. Large chalk blocks (011BD02018) may have acted as packing or may have fallen into the pit from the sides. A bronze pin is recorded in the context notes of the stones, but unfortunately no further record exists. No section was drawn.
