Discussion

A large spread of chalk, red sandstone, limestone and oolitic limestone blocks in the north/west of area 11CE. The spread (011CE00914) is almost certainly associated with a more compact setting to the north/west (011CE00751) approximately 50 x 60cm. The stones lay under buried soil (011CE00628) which was also partially above daub structure 011CE07068 to the east. Some of the stones were above a layer of dark material (011CE00924) which sealed a post hole (011CE00926) and partially sealed a redundant Roman enclosure ditch (011CE20009). Stone setting 011CE00755 (within master 011CE07068) was thought to be part of the west end of the daub structure but is on the same level as 011CE00914 and could equally be part of this spread of stones. The evidence suggests that the spread and the daub structure are closely related, with the spread probably associated with the destruction of the structure.

Large lumps of charcoal and some burnt daub were present across the spread.. The blocks of sandstone were 13-27cm in size, with one burnt block. One block of chalk was also burnt, approximately 16cm in size. The majority of the chalk blocks were angular and varied from 6cm to 24cm in length. The stones are apparently randomly distributed but an oval area was visible in plan, in the south/west corner, although it is not clear if this is coincidental as no feature was discerned cutting through the setting.
