Discussion

This was a sample trench excavated through an area of buried soil towards the eastern edge of the excavation. Two distinct soils were noted, the first (011BC00512) being a lighter (Munsell colour 10YR 4/6) sandy silt with frquent chalk inclusions. Only a single non-local stone fragment was found in this layer. The second, southernmost soil (011BC00513)was a darker (Munsell colour 10YR 4/2) sandy silt, with virtually no stone inclusions. This context contained a much higher density of material culture, including six Anglian pot sherds and a bone comb tooth.
