Surface

Phasing

The feature was cut by at least one of the east-west aligned enclosure ditches (012AB00789) to the east. It is likely that this area was used for a form of stock enclosure (possibly over-wintering), and layers of material were built up over time. Multiple recuts of an enclosure were present in this area, and some of these cut through earlier layers of the deposit, as in this case. The enclosure would appear to be Anglian in origin, although still in use in the Middle Saxon period. There may also have been a Roman precursor to the enclosure, although this was not identified in this area.

Discussion

Although classified as a surface, this was in reality an area between two ditches, part of the farm mound identified by soil specialist Richard Macphail. Some areas of compacted surface were evident, although they were not as easily defined as the surfaces to the west in area 12AD. Finds included an iron knife and a glass fragment, possibly part of a cone beaker. A number of animal bones were found, the majority of which were cattle, although sheep/goat, pig and horse were also represented.
