Pit

Phasing

The pit has been phased to the Roman period, both by the find of a single Roman pot sherd, and the recovery of 5 worked chalk fragments. The feature had no stratigraphic relationships.

Discussion

A sub-rectangular pit, the finds of worked chalk fragments in the initial half-section instigated the removal of the western half of the fill. The fill was a sandy clay loam (Munsell 10YR 4/3), with 15-20% chalk inclusions. No daub or charcoal flecking was noted. The pit also conatained an iron pin fragment. The only animal species found were cattle and sheep/goat.

The pit was cut into chalk, with an irregular profile.
