Phasing

The material culture indicates that this is a medieval or post-medieval feature, containing 2 lumps of coal, 3 sherds of green-glazed ware and a burgundy glazed sherd. Proving the ubiquity of the residual Roman material, even in this feature there are 6 Roman sherds.

Discussion

Although tentatively identified as a ditch, this feature was located right on the northern edge of the excavation, and as such was never fully exposed. It is possible that this is not a true feature, and is instead just a build-up of material occurring at the juxtaposition of the hillwash and the chalk natural. If this is the case, the build-up must begin in the medieval period, particularly as it overlies the Middle Saxon material in 012AD01005. The material itself is a sandy loam (Munsell 10YR 4/3) with 25% chalk inclusions, and as such is almost identical to the earlier hillwash (into which many of the features are cut) in the immediate vicinity.
