Pit

Phasing

A single sherd of transparent glass was found (the excavators believed this to be modern). Apart from being sealed by spit 012AD00001, the pit had no other stratigraphic relationships.

Discussion

This was an isolated feature on the eastern chalk edge of the dry valley. The fill was a sandy clay loam (Munsell colour 10YR 5/3), with 10-25% chalk inclusions (up to 5cm in dianeter). No daub or charcoal flecking were noted.

The pit was cut into solid chalk with a wide U profile.
