Discussion

Initially believed to be the ploughed-out remnants of a linear feature, this proved to be a sequence of quarry pits. Only one (012AD00042) was excavated in its entirety, with a generic cut and fill number (012AD00092 and 012AD00093) issued for the remainder of the pits (see plan above).

The primary fill of pit 012AD00042 was 012AD00194, a redeposited natural composed of chalk fragments in a sandy loam matrix (Munsell colour 10YR 5/2). A single fragment of daub and small pieces of animal bone were all that were recovered from this fill. Next (012AD00193) was a deposit of sandy loam (Munsell colour 10YR 3/2) with a high charcoal content (one sample taken). It did not extend across the entire feature. The only other find was a sherd of late Romano-British pottery. The final fill (012AD00033) was a sandy loam (Munsell colour 10YR 4/2) with up to 10% chalk inclusions (some large fragments). Only two burnt daub fragments and animal bones were recovered (mostly sheep/goat, with a single domestic goose).

The remainder of the pits were only partially excavated, although the northernmost did produce more animal bones.

The pits were all cut into natural white fragmented chalk, with irregular profiles. 012AD00042 belled out slightly beneath its surface plan, and it was the latest event, cutting through fill 012AD00092.
