Pit

Phasing

The only diagnostic material recoverd were three late Roman pot sherds. Apart from being sealed by spit 012AD00385, no stratigraphic relationships were established, although the pit was located between two ditches, 012AD07210 and 012AD07223. These ditches both contained a high density of Roman material, although 012AD07210 also contained 2 Anglian artefacts.

Discussion

The pit was only partially excavated, as its true extent was difficult to define on the ground. Its single fill was a dark silty loam (Munsell colour 10YR 3/2), with 15% chalk inclusions. Both daub and charcoal flecking were noted.

The pit was cut into chalk, with a wide flat-based U profile. The full shape of the pit was defined after rain and then subsequent differential drying.
