Pit

Phasing

The pit contained no diagnostic material culture, although the reddish silty (daub-rich) nature of the fill generally indicated an event late in the life of the Middle Saxon settlement. The feature was sealed by spit 012AD05289, but no other stratigraphic relationships with the surrounding features were established.

Discussion

This feature was assumed to be a small pit (although it could equally be the terminus of a slot). Its single fill was a reddish silty loam (Munsell colour 5YR 4/4), with virtually no chalk inclusions. It also contained a high burnt daub content. The only finds were fragments of daub and a charcoal sample.

The feature was cut into sand & gravel, with an irregular profile.
