Pit
Phasing
The only diagnostic find was a single sherd of Romano-British pottery.
Apart from being sealed by spit 012AD00590,
the feature had no other stratigraphic relationships. It was located midway
between pits 012AD05426 and 012AD05558.
Discussion
This small pit (or possibly a post hole), contained a single fill (012AD05459),
a dark silty clay loam (Munsell colour 10YR 2/1), with <5% chalk inclusions.
A high density of charcoal fragments was noted, explaing the dark colour
of the fill. Daub flecking was also present. A large angular chalk fragment
could have been post packing, giving credence to the interpretation of
the feature as a post hole.
The feature was cut into fragmented chalk natural, with a U-shaped profile.
