Pebble Surface
Phasing
The only diagnostic material culture (2 late Roman pot sherds) was recovered
from the layer sealing the pebble surface (012AD05611).
A whetstone with a pin sharpening groove was also found (possibly indicating
an Anglian date for the sealing of the surface). The surface was cut by
post hole 012AD05602.

Discussion
The pebble surface was not excavated, only cleaned back for planning. It
was sealed by a sandy silty loam (Munsell colour 10YR 3/3), which contained
very little in the way of material culture. A post hole (012AD05602,
not forming part of any obvious structure), was then cut through both the
sealing layer and the pebble surface. The post holw was filled with a sandy
clay loam (Munsell colour 10YR 3/3), with 15% chalk inclusions. Occasional
charcoal flecking was noted.
The pebble surface appeared to have a concave profile, possibly sinking
into either an earlier feature or a natural depression.
