Phasing

Although no material culture was recovered from this feature (unfortunately lifted under number 012AD00533 before it became evident there were two separate events), it seems likely that this is all that remains of an earlier phase of enclosure ditch 012AD07227. This puts the ditch into the Anglian or early Middle Saxon period.

Discussion

The fill was a sandy clay loam (Munsell 10YR 4/2) with 10% chalk inclusions. Some daub and charcoal flecking was noted. As noted above, no material culture was assigned to this feature, as it was not recognised as a separate event until almost fully excavated.

The ditch was cut into hillwash, with a U-shaped profile.
