Pit

Phasing

The only diagnostic material culture were two Roman pot sherds. Stratigraphically, the pit cut through layers 012AD00180 and 012AD00089, and was sealed by layer 012AD00022, which indicates an Anglian date for the pit. The feature was surrounded by post holes from the fence line 012AD07086.

Discussion

This shallow pit was located right on the western edge of the original baulk between areas 12AC and 12AD. It contained a single fill, a sandy loam (Munsell colour 10YR 4/3), with very few chalk inclusions. No daub or charcoal flecking were noted. The pit also contained fragments of red sandstone.

The feature was cut through layers 012AD00089 and 012AD00180, down into chalk natural, with a flat-based U profile.
