Phasing

The only diagnostic find was a single sherd of late Romano-British pottery. The only other find was a lozenge of iron, with a perforation through the centre. Apart from being sealed by spit 012AD08029, the feature had no other stratigraphic relationships. The relationship with post hole 012AD08043 immediately to the north-east was not established.

Discussion

This was an unusually wide slot, with a distinct bulge in the centre, narrowing at either end (more obvious in the south). The single fill was a light coloured sandy loam (Munsell colour 10YR 4/4), with 5% chalk inclusions (0.5-2.5cm in diameter). No daub or charcoal flecking was noted.

The slot was cut into sand and sand & gravel, with a flat-based U profile. It had a similar NW-SE alignment to slot 012AD08036 to the east and enclosure 012AD07218 to the west. It may be related to the small slot 012AD08085, which was cut by ditch 012AD00754, just to the south-east.
