Pit

Discussion

A small pit located at the northern terminus of ditch segment 012AD00740, this may be evidence of a post placement, although this could not be verified (no post pipe visible in section). The enclosure ditch 012AD07212 also terminated just at this point. The primary fill (012AD00828), was a dark (Munsell colour 10YR 3/1) sandy loam, with almost no chalk inclusions. No daub flecking was noted. The charcoal content of this fill was exceptionally high ( estimated at 50%). No finds were recovered from this primary fill. The second, and final fill (012AD00827), was a lighter (Munsell colour 10YR 3/2) sandy loam, with 5% chalk inclusions. Both daub and charcoal flecks were noted. The only finds (five animal bones) were recovered from this upper fill.

The pit was cut into solid chalk, with a slightly round-based V profile.
