Pit

Phasing

The feature contained no diagnostic material culture. The pit was sealed by layer 012AD08083, which contained Anglian material. The relationship with post hole 012AD08523 immediately to the west was no established, due the the similarity of the fills.

Discussion

This was a deep pit, located directly in alignment with a group of post holes. Only a single fill number (012AD08524) was issued for this feature, a sandy loam (Munsell colour 10YR 4/3) with 10% chalk inclusions. No charcoal flecking was noted. A deposit of burnt daub was present in the upper part of the fill. The section indicated that a darker primary fill with a lower chalk inclusion rate was also present.

The pit was cut into hillwash, with a U-profile in the  east and a steep V-shaped profile in the west.
