Phasing

Two late Roman sherds and a copper alloy spatula were found, although the find of an Anglian sherd places this slot into the Anglian period. Apart from being cut by post hole 012AD08684, the slot had no other stratigraphic relationships.

Discussion

This was one of two short, parallell slots (with 012AD08659). Both slots were cut by a line of post holes in the north. The fill was a sandy loam (Munsell colour 10YR 4/3), with chalk inclusions 5-10% (0.5-1.5cm in diameter). Although exceptionally shallow, a high density of animal bones were found, mainly sheep/goat and cattle, with a single pig bone and a red deer antler fragment. The slot was cut into hillwash with a U-shaped profile (no section was drawn).
