Pit

Phasing

The only diagnostic material culture was a single Romano-British pot sherd. Apart from being sealed by spit 012AD00601, the slot had no other stratigraphic relationships. Other slots of this type in the area were Middle Saxon in phase, although there were also a number of Roman slots.

Discussion

The slot contained a single fill, a dark sandy loam (Munsell colour 10YR 3/2), with 5% chalk inclusions (all < 5cm in diameter). Both daub and charcoal flecking were noted.

The slot was cut into hillwash with a U-shaped profile (although this was somewhat irregular in places).
