Pit

Phasing

The pit fill contained only one diagnostic sherd (of Roman grey ware). However, the context notes indicate that Niedermendig lava was present in the unexcavated segment. This indicates a later (at least Anglian) date for the pit. Stratigraphically, it was seen to cut ditches 012AD00750, and 012AD08665, and this makes it a late event in the sequence, as 012AD00750 is believed to be Middle Saxon in date.

Discussion

The pit contained a single fill, a sandy loam (Munsell colour 10YR 3/3), with 5% chalk inclusions. Some larger lumps of chalk were also present. Charcoal flecking was noted throughout, with intermittent daub flecks.

The pit was cut into hillwash and through ditches 012AD00750 and 012AD08665. Its profile was generally a flat-based U, although a slight indication of a deeper north-south oriented slot was noted in the centre of the pit. Its location at the junction of these two ditches indicates that it may have had a function relating to the corner of the enclosure.
