Discussion

The single uniform fill of the ditch was a sandy loam (Munsell colour varying from 10YR 3/3 to 10YR 4/3) with very few chalk inclusions. Due to time constraints at the end of the 1995 excavation season, only two small segments of the ditch were excavated, neither of which yielded any dateable material. The animal bone recovered was fairly evenly split between cattle and sheep/goat, with a single horse bone also recovered.

The ditch was cut into hillwash with a steep V-profile.
