Phasing

The pit has been phased to the Roman period as the only diagnostic material recovered were five late Romano-British pot sherds.

Discussion

This was an almost round deep pit, containing only 5 potsherds, and 30 animal bones. Cattle were the predominant animal species (57%) with sheep/goat accounting for a further 37%. The pit was filled with a sandy loam (Munsell colour 10YR 3/3) with 5% chalk inclusions. Charcoal but no daub flecking was noted. The context record indicates that slag fragments and sandstone were also present, although these were not retrieved due to time constraints at the end of the 1995 season (visible in the unexcavated half-section).

The pit was cut into hillwash and through slot 012AD08825. It had a steep V-profile with a flat base.
