Phasing

The ditch has been assigned to the Roman period due to the finds of exclusively (9) Roman pot sherds. It cut through stone setting 012AD08586. This is one of a number of features which have the same alignment Clich here to see a colour coded plan of the different alignments of features, following the line of the dry valley in a NNW-SSE orientation. These features are all either short slot or ditch segments, although at least 3 lines of posts also follow this alignment. The significance of these features is not yet understood.

Discussion

The single fill of this ditch was a sandy loam (Munsell colour 10YR 4/3) with 5% chalk inclusions (0.5-2cm in diameter). No daub or charcoal flecking was noted. Although the only objects recorded are the nine Roman sherds, the context record indicates that non-local stone, a clench nail and an oyster shell were also present. These may have been visible on the surface of the unexcavated segment of the ditch, but never lifted due to time constraints at the end of the 1995 season. The fill contained a relatively high density of animal bones, most of which were cattle (55%). Sheep/goat accounted for a further 30%, and pig 10%. Single bones from a horse and a cat were also present.

The ditch was cut into chalk near the eastern edge of the dry valley. It had a quite regular U-profile.
