Pit

Phasing

The only diagnostic material culture recovered were 4 later Roman pot sherds. The pit was believed to cut through ditch 012AD00003, but this was never clear on the ground, nor satisfactorily demonstrated in section.

Discussion

The feature was located on the eastern slope of the dry valley. Although treated as a separate entity from ditch 012AD00003, it is possible that this feature marks the terminus of the ditch. The single fill was a quite densely packed chalk natural (40% varying from 0.5-10cm in diameter), in a sandy loam matrix (Munsell colour 10YR 4/3), perhaps indicating that a plank or post may have been present. No daub or charcoal flecking was noted.

The pit was cut into chalk , with a sloping gradient profile. The feature was severely plough truncated.
