Pit

Phasing

The only diagnostic material culture recovered were two late Romano-British pot sherds. The relationship with ditch 012AD07227 was not established. Apart from being sealed by spit 012AD00506, the pit had no other stratigraphic relationships.

Discussion

The pit contained a single fill (012AD00778), a sandy loam (Munsell colour 10YR 4/2), with 20-25% chalk inclusions (up to 10cm in diameter). In addition, some larger chalk fragments were also present, particularly nearer the base. No daub or charcoal flecking were noted.

The feature was cut into solid chalk, with a U-shaped profile.
