Slot

Phasing

The only diagnostic finds were four Romano-British pot sherds and a (presumably residual) prehistoric flint flake. Apart from being sealed by spit 012AD00635, the slot had no other stratigraphic relationships.

Discussion

This short slot (one of a number Click here to see an outline plan of the slots in red within the large southern enclosure), may have had a functional relationship with slot 012AD08100 to the south-west, possibly some form of animal pen. The single fill (012AD08134), was a sandy loam (Munsell colour 10YR 4/3), with 5% chalk inclusions (0.5-1.5cm in diameter). Occasional charcoal and very slight daub flecking were noted.

The slot was cut into hillwash, with a U-shaped profile in the south and a shallow V-shaped profile in the north. The slot shallowed considerably to the east, and was deepest in the centre.
