Phasing

The pit was dated as Middle Saxon by the finds of two parts of a copper alloy pin pair.

Discussion

The only fill contained a number of animal bones and 3 copper alloy objects. One of these was a Late Iron Age brooch inlay with a glass boss. The other two dated the feature, and were two pins (one broken) of a Middle Saxon pin pair. All of the objects were found in the western end of the pit, whereas the animal bone tended to cluster in the centre and the eastern end. The pit was an unusual elongated ovate shape, slightly wider at the eastern end, with a U-profile in the north and a V-profile in the south, and was cut into hillwash.
