Discussion

This trench, along with 13AB and 13AC, was excavated by machine on the 3rd August 1995. It was sited specifically to investigate the western boundary ditches of the settlement. In the event, two ditches were located, although not exactly as predicted by the geophysics. The westernmost ditch seen in the geophysical survey was not observed during excavation, although a natural feature filled with solution material was present in this location. In addition, a small ditch (013AA00003) not detected by the geophysics was excavated in the eastern part of the trench. The eastern of the two enclosure ditches (013AA00005) detected by the geophysics was found exactly as predicted. This ditch contained a copper alloy fragment, some fragments of red chalk and 6 animal bones. Two slots (013AA00007 and 013AA00009), indicating a recut of the ditch, were cut through the earlier ditch on its western edge. The easternmost ditch 013AA00003 was smaller, narrower and deeper than 013AA00005, and contained animal bone as well as a fragment of a bone pin. Another segment of both of these enclosure ditches was also excavated in area 12AE
