Pit

Phasing

Although five late Roman pot sherds were recovered from the upper fill, the find of a single Anglian sherd places this pit in the Anglian period. The pit was revealed by the removal of spit 002CB00250. It had no other stratigraphic relationships.

Discussion

This was an unusually shaped pit, located some 4 metres to the north of Grubenhaus 002CB01261. It was excavated by trowel in two quadrants (north-west and south-east). The primary fill (002CB01280) was only noted in the south-eastern quadrant. It was a sandy silty loam (Munsell colour 10YR 3/3), with a high charcoal content (one large sample taken). Occasional heat-cracked local flint was also present. The upper fill (002CB01274) was a sandy silty loam (Munsell colour 10YR 3/3) with 10-15% chalk inclusions. Charcoal was also present, but not in the quantities of the primary fill. All of the diagnostic finds were from the upper fill.

The pit was cut into the buried soil 002CB00890, with a wide U-shaped profile.
