Pit

Phasing

The find of a partial barrel-shaped jar gives a late Bronze Age/early Iron Age date for this feature. Apart from being sealed by spit 002CB00001, the pit had no other stratigraphic relationships. The excavator erroneosly believed the vessel to be a beaker. The feature has not yet been digitised, and thus a scan of the plan is used above.

Discussion

This was a small pit located near the eastern edge of the gravel in the north-eastern part of area 2CB. The fill was a sandy loam (Munsell colour 7.5YR 3/4), with very few chalk inclusions. It contained a partial LBA/EIA jar and a fragment of calcite. In the centre of the pit was a small patch of sooty material and some scraps of bone (not deemed to be a cremation deposit).

The feature was cut ino gravel, with a stepped-U profile.
