002CB02354
Pit
Phasing
The feature contained no diagnostic material culture. Apart from being
sealed by context 002CB00001, the feature
had no other stratigraphic relationships. It was very similar in nature
to 002CB02356, which was located
only a couple of metres to the west.
Discussion
This feature was excavated as a single entity, although it soon became
apparent that two features were present (either two pits in close proximity
or a double post hole. Its location within the roundhouse 002CB07036
may be fortuitous, as the round house was never seen on the ground (it
was identified from a high level balloon photograph). The fill was a sandy
loam (Munsell colour 10YR 4/3), with 10% chalk inclusions. The section
indicates that the feature may have been overcut into a subsoil with a
much higher chalk inclusion rate.
The features were cut into a chalky gravel, and although given a W-shaped
profile in the context record, may represent two separate features with
V-shaped profiles.
