Pit

Phasing

Two prehistoric flint blades were found, although a late Roman sherd was also present. Apart from being sealed by spit 002CB00250, the pit had no other stratigraphic relationships.

Discussion

This shallow pit was located half way between Grubenhaus 002CB00046 in the south and pit 002CB02597 in the north. It was apparently initially given the number 002CB00022, with surface finds lifted under fill number 002CB00023, but remained unexcavated until the following year. Its single fill was a sandy clay loam (Munsell colour 10YR 4/3). It contained a much higher density of chalk inclusions (20-25%) in the west, with only 5% in the east. Two cattle bones and two horse bones were recovered.

The pit was cut into the buried soil 002CB00890, with an undulating profile.
