Cremation Cemetery

A small cremation cemetery situated in the north-western part of area 2DA. A total of 5 cremation pits were excavated, 3 of which were urned and 2 un-urned cremations.

002DA00164 contained an urned cremation, badly truncated by ploughing. The urn was in very poor condition, distorted with most of the inclusions in the fabric dissolved, although the base and part of the side survived.

002DA00167 also contained an urned cremation, again badly truncated by ploughing. Fragments of pottery and bone were found in the fill of the pit around the urn indicating that the cremation had been heavily disturbed by animal burrowing. The fill of this cremation was much darker (Munsell 10/YR/31) than the fills of the other 4 cremations.

The shallow and irregular pit 002DA00169View showing pre-excavation cremated bone fragments contained an un-urned cremation, badly truncated by ploughing. The pit contained substantial fragments of long bones and cranium and many small fragments of calcined bone within a black sandy matrix. No visible lumps of charcoal were present.

002DA00171 contained an urned cremation, badly truncated by ploughing. The flat based pot was tilted to the north through ploughing. The cremation pit only survived to a depth of 5cm, being heavily animal burrowed. As with 002DA00167, fragments of cremation material were found below and all around the sides of the pot.

002DA00172 contained an un-urned cremation, badly truncated by ploughing and heavily animal burrowed. The cremation comprised of large numbers of small calcined bone fragments in a black sandy matrix. The pit fill also contained a few natural flint fragments and a sherd of pottery.
