Pit

Discussion

The pit was originally believed to be only 26cm deep (011AE00039), with a find of one unassigned potsherd. However, further excavation proved that a primary fill (011AE00064) containing animal bones and prehistoric finds was present. Of particular note was the cattle horncore  A view from the east showing the horncore in situ.  which protruded out of the section. Also found was a carbonized hazelnut shell, and one find of prehistoric pottery. The primary fill was characterised by the presence of charcoal flecks, which were absent in the secondary fill. The pit was located less than a metre to the east of pit 011AE00157, and it is highly likely that these form one of the Neolithic pit pairs which are found throughout this area. (for instance 011AE00427 and 011AE00429)
