Ditch

Discussion

Initially believed to be the truncated remnants of a barrow ditch, due to the curvilinear shape, no evidence for any burial or cremation was noted within its circumference. Although 2 sherds of Roman pottery were recovered from the feature, the finds of a flint flake and a sherd of Middle Bronze Age pottery do indicate a prehistoric date for the feature, be it a barrow ditch or not. The ditch was completely truncated in the east, but the western end was believed to be the terminus. The ditch had a general V-profile and was cut into the natural chalk gravel. There were two features within the projected circumference of the feature, both pits. Pit 011AE00341 contained 1 sherd of Roman pottery, but the small pit 011AE00291 contained 1 sherd of possible Middle Bronze Age pot, and thus may be contemporary with the ditch.
