Discussion
This was the first of four spits (above 012AA00095,
012AA00121
and the smaller 012AA00207) in this
area to try to define the return of a sequence of ditches swinging in from
the south and south-east, at the intersection with the enclosures to the
north. This spit was directly beneath the machine clearance of the topsoil.
The area was forked (due to the dry conditions prevalent in the first part
of the 1995 season), then shovel-scraped and brushed before trowelling.
Most of the finds from this spit were in fact lifted under
012AA00001
(the machine clearance), although one Roman potsherd was lifted under this
number. Ditch 012AA00074 was defined
under this spit.
