Pit

Phasing

No diagnostic material culture was recovered from this feature. Apart from being sealed by spit 012AB00001, the pit had no other stratigraphic relationships. It appears to align with the terminus of ditch 012AB00703, but this feature contained no material culture.

Discussion

This small pit contained the partial articulated skeleton of a young cow. The single fill was a silty clay loam (Munsell colour 10YR 3/3), with 10% chalk inclusions (all less than 3cm in diamater). No daub or charcoal flecking was evident.

The pit was cut into hillwash, with a U-shaped profile. The full extent was difficult to define, although it appeared that the partial skeleton only just fit into the shallow cavity.
