Discussion

This was the initial machine clearance of the area, which is located between areas 12AA to the east and 12AC to the west. The material removed was the ploughsoil and part of the final layer of hillwash, to a maximum depth of 75cm at the northern end and 15cm in the south. As can be seen from the plan above, the finds were only lifted from two specific segments under this number (both of these were where the baulks originally separating the three areas were removed by machine, later in the 1995) season.

Subsequent spits were excavated in two main areas, the first covering the central and southern part of the area, and the second in the north, over a buried soil deposit.
