Slot

Phasing

The only finds were two late Roman pot sherds and a late Roman coin (AD388-402). The slot had no stratigraphic relationships with other features, and was sealed by spit 012AD00635. It may have a functional relationship to the similar slot 012AD08135, which is situated at a right angle some 90cm to the north-east.

Discussion

This was a shallow slot (one of a number Click here to see an outline plan of the slots in red within the large southern enclosure), aligned NNW-SSE, slightly deeper at both ends. The fill was a sandy loam (Munsell colour 10YR 4/3), with 5% chalk inclusions (0.5-2cm in diameter). Only small fragments of animal bone were found. The feature was cut into hillwash, with a round-based V profile (where this could be established).
